Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will critically analyze and articulate three fundamental philosophies of the Kingdom Hearts franchise, exploring the philosophical underpinnings and implications of themes such as the power of friendship, balance between light and darkness, and the journey of self-discovery and identity within the context of psychological theory and practice.
  2. Participants will demonstrate advanced skills in integrating mindfulness-based techniques with key mechanics of the Kingdom Hearts franchise to develop three therapeutic activities tailored to the needs of diverse client populations. These activities will focus on promoting emotional regulation, self-awareness, and interpersonal skills within a therapeutic context, aligning with current research on mindfulness-based interventions in mental health treatment.
  3. Participants will synthesize complex concepts related to play therapy, including its definition, underlying principles, and the ten seminal theories and historically relevant approaches that inform play therapy practice. Through critical analysis and evaluation, participants will deepen their understanding of the theoretical foundations and evidence-based practices within the field of play therapy, enabling them to apply this knowledge effectively in clinical settings.
  4. Participants will demonstrate advanced competency in identifying and evaluating two play therapy interventions that leverage characters, themes, and narratives present in video games to promote the mental health and well-being of clients across the lifespan. Drawing on their knowledge of play therapy theory and practice, participants will assess the therapeutic potential of video game narratives and mechanics, and develop innovative interventions that harness the therapeutic power of play to address the diverse needs of children, adolescents, adults, and families in clinical practice.

 

Course Instructor

Daniel Tsang M. Ed., L.P.S.C. is a Professional School Counselor in the state of Virginia who holds a lifelong dedication to media literacy, intersectional-advocacy, and making life as fun as can be. He has a variety of passions across all geek fandoms such as video games (with a specialization in JRPG’s), TTRPGs, cosplay, writing, anime, comics/manga, pop culture, witchcraft, and more. Part of his professional competencies is keeping up with the latest interest with the populations he works with. Daniel believes that there is no easier way to have students become invested in their counseling content than making it a holistic balance of escapism, adventure, and purpose.

Continuing Education Credits

Psychologists: Geek Therapeutics is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Geek Therapeutics maintains responsibility for this program and its content. 

Counselors: Geek Therapeutics has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7042. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Geek Therapeutics is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs. 

Social Workers: Geek Therapeutics, #1769, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB)Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Geek Therapeutics maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 05/19/2022 – 05/19/2025. Social workers completing this course receive 1 continuing education credits. 

Play Therapists: Geek Therapeutics has been approved by APT as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, No. 21-649. Programs that do not qualify for APT credit are clearly identified. Geek Therapeutics is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
