About this Event

This training course will explore the history of cosplay and how it has become an intercultural phenomenon. Specifically, the passions and various roles within the Cosplay community will be looked at from a humanistic perspective, examining ways in which the expression of one’s self through Cosplay can be therapeutically rewarding, self-empowering, and insight building. Case examples of how Cosplay has impacted clients from a variety of backgrounds will be given, and interventions on how clinicians can work with their clients within the passion of Cosplay will be introduced.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the history of Cosplay.
2. Create three ways to engage clients with Cosplay interventions that promote self-confidence and the building of self-insight.
3. Explain how to begin to engage in cosplay themselves to build an experiential awareness of various selves and emotional outlets. 

4. Participants will be able to define play therapy and identify the 10 seminal theories and historically relevant approaches that guide play therapy practice.

5. Participants will identify two play therapy interventions that combine characters, themes, and/or narratives present in Geek Culture that harness the therapeutic power of play for supporting the mental health and well-being of children, adolescents, adults, and/or families.

Course Instructor:

Joseph Atanasio, PsyD is a person-centered licensed psychologist in the state of NY. After graduating from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology with a doctoral degree in Clinical Forensic Psychology, Joe transitioned to working with older adults in a variety of settings including nursing homes, adult care facilities, physical rehabilitation facilities, and assisted living. He has since been engaged in the mental health care of the underserved geriatric population. Dr. Joe has an established private practice in both Queens and Manhattan in NYC. He sees a wide range of clients ages 12 and up, focusing on depression, social anxiety, grief and loss, and stress management. He engages Clients through a variety of therapeutic models, focusing on building emotional awareness through mindfulness practices. Dr Joe is an avid D&D player and Dungeon Master for the past 3 years on his personal time, running groups in-person and online. After seeing the therapeutic potential of such a wonderful and interactive game, he began a 10-week group therapy model using Dungeons and Dragons. He runs older adult, young adult, and teen groups using the tabletop game to build critical thinking skills, social skills, and manage aspects of anxiety and depression.

Continuing Education Credits:

Psychologists: Geek Therapeutics is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Geek Therapeutics maintains responsibility for this program and its content

Counselors: Geek Therapeutics has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7042. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Geek Therapeutics is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

Social Workers: Geek Therapeutics, #1769, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB)Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Geek Therapeutics maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 05/19/2022 – 05/19/2025. Social workers completing this course receive 1 continuing education credits.

Other Professions: This activity qualifies for the specified number of hours of instructional content as required by many licensing boards and professional organizations. Save your course outline and certificate of completion, and contact your board or organization for specific requirements. Completion of the course(s) with a post-test score of 80% or better is required to receive continuing education credit; there is no partial credit.
