About This Event

Television families are an essential part of client culture, especially in the US. Over multiple generations, the US television family has been a reflection of the culture at the time. Initially, television families presented as idealized goals for family dynamics with minimal representation of realistic family dynamics. However, television families have become more diverse over time, with reflections of issues many families face. Through this transition, we can gain an understanding of clients’ perceptions of family and themselves based on the characters they most identify with and value as part of their lived experience. In this training, we will review examples of how representation of families in US television has changed over the last seventy years, how clients relate to television families, and approaches to use in clinical work using family systems theory.
