About this Event

Step into the intriguing world of The Umbrella Academy with the first installment of our two-part continuing education series, “Understanding Complex Trauma: The Case of The Umbrella Academy.” Based on the beloved comic book series by Gerard Way, this hit Netflix show follows the tumultuous lives of seven children adopted by the enigmatic billionaire, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, in a bid to create a team of superheroes destined to save the world. However, beneath the veneer of heroism lies a complex narrative of childhood trauma, shaped by Hargreeves’ unorthodox training methods, tragic events, and emotional neglect. In this training, participants will explore the characters’ trauma responses as adults through the lens of Complex PTSD, as defined by the upcoming ICD-11. Drawing on diagnostic criteria, we will dissect the psychological intricacies of each character’s journey and propose interventions tailored to their unique experiences. Join us as we unravel the layers of trauma within The Umbrella Academy, offering insights and strategies for supporting individuals facing similar challenges in real-world contexts.

  2. Participants will analyze how characters in The Umbrella Academy present with Complex PTSD symptoms based on their individual experiences, drawing connections between fictional depictions and real-life clinical presentations.
