Healing Trauma Through Vigilantism Pt. 3; Batman and theBody: the Physicality and Treatment of Trauma

Course Information

Following part 2: As a superhero without powers, Batman has experienced a variety of
life-threatening injuries and traumatic events that have left him physically and emotionally
scarred. This course will examine those events and Batman’s reaction to them as a way to
discuss the impacts trauma can have on a person’s body and how trauma is a physical
experience, regardless of the type of traumatic event. Through a discussion of Batman as a
client, the presenter will discuss trauma informed treatment and somatic approaches that can be used to treat these challenges.

Learning Objectives

1. Using the Batman story and an examination of Bruce Wayne’s traumas, be able to identify the ways trauma impacts a person’s body. (L01)
2. Through a discussion of Batman’s trauma reactions, be able to conceptualize trauma-informed care and therapeutic environments (L02).
3. Be able to use Batman’s story as a vehicle for understanding and discussing the body a safe/unsafe place for clients with physical trauma. (L03).
4. Engage in a discussion about somatic therapies and their benefits for trauma clients L04).

Joy Garcia (he/they) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who practices on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian reservation and specializes in trauma treatment, crisis, policy, and working with LGBTQ+ individuals. Working with all age ranges served at the Tribal Health facility, he has been certified in Phase 2 Brainspotting, Level 2 Gottman work, and as an Acudetox Specialist.
