About this Event
In teaching clients about the concepts of ACT metaphor is a powerful tool. ACT therapists use a wide range of metaphor’s in their day to day practice. This training is to help provide geek specific metaphors to help clinicians find the metaphors that will best resonate with their clients. We will use examples from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, Avatar the Last Air Bender, YA Novels and more, to teach the principles of ACT.

Learning Objectives:
1.Participants will describe how metaphors are used in ACT.
2.Participants will list at least three different metaphors that utilize geek culture.
3.Participants will compile tools on how to identify potential metaphors in the geek media they consume.
4. Participants will be able to define play therapy and identify the 10 seminal theories and historically relevant approaches that guide play therapy practice.
5. Participants will identify two play therapy interventions that combine characters, themes, and/or narratives present in Geek Culture that harness the therapeutic power of play for supporting the mental health and well-being of children, adolescents, adults, and/or families.
Course Instructors:
Dr. Megan Connell is a board-certified clinical psychologist whose practice encompasses a wide variety of topics and approaches. Her innovated work with girls, geeks and games has garnered her national attention, particularly for her work in applied role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons. She co-developed applied, therapeutic role-playing games training curriculum for mental health professionals. Dr. Connell has appeared on Geek and Sundry to talk about the interface of gaming and psychology, regularly speaks at major gaming conventions nationally, and she writes, directs, and produces the YouTube series Psychology at the Table, as well as the live play Dungeons & Dragons game Clinical Roll. She is active on Twitter as @MeganPsyD.
