How to Increase Your Geek Cultural Awareness and Clinical Competency Ethics Course

Difficulty
Course track

This training course will review ethical guidelines as established for mental health professionals, specifically relating to competency and professional judgement. With the introduction of new and unique interventions used within Geek Therapy, it is important for clinicians to be comprehensive in their understanding of Geek culture and aware of the ethical issues that may arise if appropriate competency is not maintained. Improving competency through important peer written readings, engaging with various Geek-culture communities, and pushing the boundaries of our own personal experiences within ‘Geekdom’ can be important in maintaining competency when working with this specific population.

Learning Objectives:

1. Apply ethical guidelines of clinical and cultural competency to professional practice when it comes to working in a Geek-Therapy modality.

2. Identify Geek-Therapy modality interventions and when reaching out for consultation would be best practice.

3. Participants will be able to define play therapy and identify the 10 seminal theories and historically relevant approaches that guide play therapy practice.

4. Participants will identify two play therapy interventions that combine characters, themes, and/or narratives present in Geek Culture that harness the therapeutic power of play for supporting the mental health and well-being of children, adolescents, adults, and/or families.
