Cheating vs. Being a Cheater: How to Reduce Cheating in Games - 1 CE Hour

Video games are designed to grab our attention, to motivate us to play, and to enjoy ourselves as we do it. In this lecture, Dr. Jamie Madigan will explore some of the most common psychological levers that game designers use to get players engaged.

Cheating vs. Being a Cheater: How to Reduce Cheating in Games

About this Training

This lecture will explore the social nature of cheating in online games and its effects on people’s identity. Beyond flagrant cheating through the use of nefarious software like trainers or aimbots, it will look at more mundane violations of rules such as disconnecting when losing, buying grey market accounts that have been leveled up, or exploiting bugs in the game. This talk will also look at research on the “viral” nature of dishonest behavior and what implications cheating has on our self-esteem and identity when framed in different ways.
